Critical Teaching Manifesto

Core Beliefs about Education

I Believe…

  • challenge and frustration are part of the learning process (for both students and teachers) and should be embraced as we work to overcome obstacles.
  • the relationships we form with our students are one of the most important aspects of our job as teachers.
  • education should motivate students to work towards a society that strives for ecological justice.
  • how we teach our students is just as important as what we teach our students.

My Science Classroom

As a science educator, my goal is to impress upon my students the importance of understanding and appreciating our natural world. I want them to leave my classroom with a sense of purpose and power in protecting our environment and pushing for a society that prioritizes the health of our planet.

I want to focus less on teaching students about science, and more on teacher students how to learn and how to do! I will incorporate Indigenous ways of knowing and place-based education wherever I can, and work towards creating a science classroom that embodies these principals.
